America's New Mercenaries

As the United States expands its secretive air war and Special Operations missions around the world, it is growing increasingly reliant on a new breed of specialized contractors that is virtually unknown to the American public, yet is hired to carry out vital U.S. missions abroad.

Call them second-generation Blackwaters—the newest players in the largest military outsourcing program in American history.

Although the use of private contractors in the theater of war has been extremely controversial, the Obama administration has greatly expanded the outsourcing of key aspects of the U.S.-led counterinsurgency wars in the Middle East and Africa.
